Marion Cotillard gives voice to Coco Chanel in the virtual reality project ‘Rencontre(s)’

Marion Cotillard will play Coco Chanel in “Rencontre(s)”, an immersive, interactive and multi-sensory project that transports participants to the Paris of the Roaring Twenties. Making its world premiere as part of the Venice Film Festival’s newly renamed Venice Immersive showcase for new media projects, the pop story experience blends live elements with 2D animation and XR embellishments to retrace the making of Chanel No 5. . Commissioned by Chanel and produced by Paris-based studio Atelier Daruma, the 15-minute immersive experience puts participants in the shoes of Ernest Beaux, the Russian-French perfumer who created the iconic elixir for the fashion icon. Featuring an animated version of Coco Chanel in both English and French, the Oscar-winning actress portrays the designer at the height of her fame as Queen of Paris, as a 38-year-old doyenne and a magnetic pole for modernism and the avant-garde. from the city. scenes

“Marion did an amazing job envisioning, designing and embodying this voice, bringing an uncanny mix of strength and playfulness,” says project director and Atelier Daruma founder Mathias Chelebourg. “This was one of the most fascinating moments of my life in Paris and I am convinced that her Oscar-winning performance of her in ‘La Vie en Rose’ gave her the opportunity to develop a deep personal relationship. “We all felt incredibly lucky to have her on board for our adventure and were blown away by how natural the match sounded,” Chelebourg continues. “Now when I close my eyes and imagine Paris in 1921, I have Marion in my ears.”


The 15-minute immersive installation will move participants through live scenarios, incorporating interactive VR animation alongside haptic, touch-related, and other sense-based elements, reflecting the growing ambition from Venice Immersive for “multi-layered virtual experiences.”

“We want to fully express the full range of XR projects,” says Venice Immersive curator Liz Rosenthal. “This installation project goes beyond simply putting on a pair of headphones; there are haptic experiences and things you can actually see outside.”

“There are also smells,” adds Rosenthal. “It’s a whole hybrid installation that incorporates scent and touch, of which Mathias is a master.”

“It’s also a very interesting example of how a brand as powerful as Chanel is looking for immersive media,” says curator Michel Reilhac. “In this case, Mathias was basically tasked with creating a piece that is relevant to his own story, a piece that is narrative and not promotional, and tells the story of a very significant symbol of our time. So it’s a very interesting collaboration between an artist and a brand.”
